International Missions: Building a Hearing Health System in Jamaica
LexCare Hearing Foundation is leading a first-of-its-kind effort to establish a comprehensive, sustainable hearing healthcare system in Jamaica. For too long, children and adults have lived with untreated hearing loss due to the lack of access, infrastructure, and resources.
Key Milestones
-
Multiple discovery hearing missions supporting the Jamaica School for the Deaf giving children first hearing tests, hearing aids and on-site speech and hearing care.
-
Groundbreaking Demography Report: In partnership with demographer Lydia Osbourne, we are producing Jamaica’s first national report on hearing loss, deafness, and early intervention needs.
-
Global & Local Expertise: Our advisory network includes Dr. Matt Bush (University of Kentucky), Dr. Howard Francis (renowned Jamaican ENT surgeon), Charlene Modeste (Jamaican audiologist and cochlear implant specialist), and local community leaders.
-
Culturally Sensitive Approach: We will work hand-in-hand with Jamaican stakeholders and government officials to ensure this system is built with authentic collaboration and Jamaican ownership—not outside delivery.
Strategic Vision
-
Workforce training and mentorship for ENT surgeons, audiologists, and speech-language professionals
-
Engaging, promoting hearing careers in high schools and universities like the University of the West Indies
-
School-based outreach, newborn screening, and early intervention systems
-
General/Adult screening events
-
Advocacy to embed hearing care into Jamaica’s health infrastructure
This transformational work is life-changing not only for today’s children and adults with untreated hearing loss, but also for future generations who will gain access to early identification, education, communication, and opportunity.
