From Mother to Advocate: The Beginning of a Mission

Fifteen years ago, I was a mom on a mission. I was fueled by love, faith, and fierce determination to improve life for my daughter, Lexi. At that time, there was no waterproof solution for cochlear implants. Lexi's journey was just beginning.

I was balancing my day job in Development at Vanderbilt University while investing my nights and weekends into building a small nonprofit called Songs for Sound — which is now known as LexCare Hearing Foundation.

In my search for solutions, I discovered something simple yet powerful. Swim cap material could keep Lexi’s processors secure during her active moments. So, I bought swim caps, cut them into headbands, and continued to push forward.

A Moment of Inspiration: Engineering Competition

I heard about a senior engineering competition at Vanderbilt. It felt like a long shot. I was up against innovative ideas for heart surgeries and complex projects. Surprisingly, Dr. Paul King, a professor leading the program, took a chance on my heartfelt submission.

I was fortunate to work with two brilliant students who developed a prototype for a waterproof system. Eventually, we shared our designs with a global hearing company working on something similar. Although I can’t say if our designs directly influenced future solutions, that experience ignited a passion in me — a passion to change the world for people living with hearing loss.

A Full Circle Moment

Fast forward nearly 15 years. Just two weeks ago, at one of our free hearing screening events, I glanced over and recognized a man taking a screening. It was Dr. Paul King, the professor who believed in my dream.

At that moment, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. I reflected on the journey — the struggles, the blessings, and the beautiful full-circle experiences orchestrated only by God.

Today, Lexi is thriving. She's an Honors and AP student. As she approaches her senior year, she speaks fluently and lives the full life we once only dreamed of.

The Growth of LexCare Hearing Foundation

LexCare Hearing Foundation is growing faster than ever. Our mission has expanded dramatically. We now strive to reach ONE MILLION EARS through various initiatives:

  • Over 200 mobile outreach events annually, serving veterans, seniors, and underserved communities.

  • Organizing 12 Hearoes Day events across the U.S., connecting individuals to local hearing health resources.

  • Supporting VA systems with vital hearing health services.

  • Building international hearing healthcare models in countries like Jamaica.

  • Expanding our “Hear to Learn” screenings in Nashville Metro Schools.

  • Launching our innovative CARE TEAM, which revolutionizes the journey to access hearing care.

Why I Am Sharing This Story

I share this story because none of this happens without partnership. It takes generous individuals, businesses, and brands who believe in empowering others to maximize their God-given potential.
